The Arch of Constantine

It was erected in 312, on the ancient way of the triumphs, to commemorate the victory of Constantine I against Maxentius in the battle of Ponte Milvio. The arch has three fornix with bases built in blocks of marble, while the walkable environment of the attic is brick. The frames and friezes are, for the most part, coming from other monuments of previous eras, so much so as to suggest an open-air museum. In the Middle Ages the arch was transformed into a tower and incorporated into the fortifications of the Frangipane. In the early 1800s it was "liberated" and restored to its original form.
